BIAC-ACLC Brief to the Standing Committee on Health Re: Bill C-6

The Brain Injury Association of Canada – BIAC – would like to thank the Standing Committee on Health for their invitation to speak to and answer questions with regards to Helmet Certification on Thursday, May 28, 2009

The Brain Injury Association of Canada strongly urges the Standing Committee on Health studying Bill C-6 to support regulations requiring minimum standards for sport helmets, and in particular to include the contents of Bill C-289, a private member’s bill introduced by Dr. Hedy Fry. As well, within the legislation, BIAC would like to see provisions that would allow CSA helmet standards implemented in a far more timely manner once all CSA product testing has been satisfactorily completed. Health Canada staff should continue to take an active role during the standards development process; that they develop ongoing impact assessments on the implications and / or changes to the standard; and that Heath Canada staff consult widely with stakeholders during the process of standard development.

Online consultation on the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to invite you to participate in the online consultation on the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Convention).

The Convention is of great importance to Canadians. Canada signed the Convention in March 2007, meaning that Canada is currently required to respect the general object and purpose of the treaty. The Government of Canada is seeking the views of Canadians, and particularly of the disability community, in order to inform the decision on ratification. These views would also play an important role in informing any measures that may be taken post-ratification at the federal level to further implement the Convention.

Trauma course reduces injuries
By Richard Watts, Times Colonist, June 8, 2009

Parents and teachers talk all the time about the perils of drinking and driving and other risky activities. But how many kids actually listen?

A new survey by the Vancouver Island Health Authority shows when kids are given the chance to hear, see, touch, smell and even taste the results of risky activity, they get the message.

A survey of 550 students compared questionnaire results of teens who had gone through a program called PARTY — Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth, which began running in the Island health region in 2003 — with those who had not.

June is Brain Injury Awareness Month in PEI

Media Release
Charlottetown, PE
June is Brain Injury Awareness Month

June is Brain Awareness Month and parents are being reminded of the importance of helmet safety. Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risks of brain injuries in many sport and recreational activities, such as skiing, biking and in-line skating.

The following are some of the initiatives being carried out by the Brain Injury Coalition of Prince Edward Island along with its partners:
* Premier Robert Ghiz will sign a proclamation proclaiming June as Brain Injury Awareness Month,
* Brain Injury Coalition will be partnering with INIP and the City Police to introduce a program regarding bicycle helmet safety,
* We will be partnering with business in the downtown area raising awareness of brain injuries, through a national initiative called “Great Canadian BBQ”,
* On June 24th we will be hosting a forum on “Prevention of Brain Injury” at Murphy’s Community Centre. We will also be showing the documentary “Wipeout”

Wipeout, produced by Lionel Goddard and the Knowledge Network, tells the story of three young BC men who thrived on extreme sports until traumatic brain injuries changed their lives. Olympic gold medalist Ross Rebagliati narrates this documentary, which offers unprecedented insight into the lives of those who are part of what doctors call the “invisible epidemic” – brain injury, the leading cause of death and disability among men under the age of 35.
