Dear Community Partner,

On March 4, 2010, the Government of Canada, through its Budget 2010, announced two enhancements to the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), grant and bond. We are pleased to advise that the legislation to enact these changes received Royal Assent on December 15, 2010. The ‘carry forward’ and ‘roll over’ provisions will provide Canadians with disabilities and their families with more flexibility when saving for the future.

Please find below some questions and answers that we hope will assist you in helping your members and clients to understand and benefit from these new provisions.

Injured couple on long road to recovery

‘You know,” says Rev. Anthony Bailey, “Joe is the kind of guy who’d give you the shirt off his back,” he said Thursday — then pausing, perhaps for originality.

“And then his pants and his shoes.”

Joe is Joe Sayer. He turns 36 this weekend, which is cause for celebration.

In February, it was unclear whether he and his wife, Beverley Sunday, 31, would live to see another season, let alone another year.

They were critically injured in a car accident on Feb. 19 along Lucerne Boulevard in Gatineau.

In collaboration with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Toronto) and Virginia Commonwealth University, IWK Health Centre is pleased to host a 2-day workshop for professionals on Brain Injury Family Intervention (BIFI/BIFI-A): An Evidence-Based Approach.

This workshop will focus on clinical intervention skills for professionals who work with youth and adults who have sustained an acquired brain injury (ABI) and their families. After three successful sold-out workshops in Toronto in 2009 and 2010, the experienced team of international facilitators will be offering this intensive training for professionals (e.g. social workers, psychologists, rehabilitation counsellors) for the first time in Atlantic Canada.

Past participants reported feeling more confident and better equipped to address the complex needs of families (as revealed through pre- and post-training assessment).

BIFI/BIFI-A Workshop: March 28, 2011
Advanced Follow-Up Workshop: March 29, 2011

The Advanced Follow-Up Workshop is exclusively for individuals who have completed the BIFI/BIFI-A training workshop on Day 1.

Athletes often accept bumps and bruises in contact sports as badges of honour, the price paid for a chance to participate in a winning game.

True, some bruises may be minor and heal quickly but there’s probably no such ailment as a minor bruise to the brain. Any such bruise, better known as a concussion, is a serious problem.

Traditionally, some athletes and their coaches may not have taken concussions very seriously because the symptoms aren’t always immediately apparent. There may be no blood on the ice or field. The bruising may not be noticeable to the eye.
