Our top five motorcycle safety tips are below.

Motorcycle Safety Tip 1

Proper riding gear is essential to your safety and includes – a DOT approved helmet (that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218), eye protection, gloves, long pants and over the ankle boots.

Helmets protect the rider from head injury, flying objects, hearing loss and cold or sunburn. Head injuries (traumatic brain injury/concussion) account for the vast majority of motorcycle fatalities. Statistics show riders are five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury in a crash without a helmet.

In the past five years, motorcycle helmet use has been increasing slowly but steadily – from 48 percent in 2005 to 67 percent in 2009, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The American Motorcyclist Association has a state-by-state list of helmet laws for your reference.

Information for Outreach Groups :
We are excited to get the 2010 season started and are even more excited to have you join us. Here is some information on how the Outreach Program works :
We offer outreach groups ‘transferable memberships’ which means that you can use a single membership on a rotating basis. For example, if your group purchases three memberships at $30 each, you can bring 3 participants each time to sail, these participants can be different every week. These transferable memberships work well for outreach groups that come on a regular basis (i.e once or twice a week). For groups that only plan on coming once a month, or a couple of times throughout the season, the organization can purchase one membership for the organization and pay accordingly for each sailor. The price for each sail is $10.00.

We understand that for people that have never sailed, there may be many questions and concerns. We welcome interested parties to come and book a FREE half hour demo sail with us. You get the opportunity to see our facilities, meet our staff and volunteers, and try out our boats!

For the months of May and June, we are open five days a week, closing on Monday and Tuesday. We will be booking outreach sails on Wednesdays and Fridays at noon and 2pm. In the months of July and August, we will be open 7 days a week and outreach sails will go out on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sailing at noon and 2 pm. Participants that do not require the assistance of a hoyer lift may book sails on our 22ft keel boats. These groups sails can accommodate up to 4 sailors. Participants that require the hoyer lift may book a sail on our Martin 16 and sail with a qualified sailing companion. These boats can only accommodate the one sailor and the companion. These sails typically last 1 hr to 1 and a half hrs.

We are flexible in sail times, so if these times to do not work for your organization, please contact us and we will try to accommodate you.

We also encourage participants to become their own member and be open to come sail at their own leisure. If you require any more information please do not hesitate to visit our website or contact us at the club house for more information.

The staff and volunteers at the Queens Quay Disabled Sailing Program looks forward to seeing you on the water!

Primary objective: Various guidelines have been developed to implement coherent and uniform management of persons with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but those have typically been developed for adults or children and may not address or meet the specific needs of adolescents. The purpose of this study was to explore the specific service needs of adolescents (12–18 years) after a mTBI.

Study design: Qualitative phenomenological study.

Methods and procedures: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 adolescents and their parents who had received different levels of care from paediatric trauma centres within the previous 12 months.

Main outcomes and results: All adolescents and parents expressed the need to receive information about the injury, its expected recovery and when to return to activities. Many adolescents reported wanting to be seen rapidly, by professionals who genuinely care about them and who acknowledge that they have specific needs that differ from those of younger children. Parents and, to a lesser degree, adolescents think that enhanced communication between the healthcare and school systems would be beneficial following a mTBI to assist in returning to demanding academic activities.

Conclusions: Professionals involved in the management of adolescents with mTBI should be aware of their needs in order to provide optimal and developmentally appropriate services. Keywords: Adolescent, traumatic brain injury, health service needs, needs assessment
