This presentation will provide an overview of the key findings and overall recommendations of the World Report on Disability. The findings include the impact of barriers faced by persons with disabilities that often result in less education, poor health, smaller wages and salaries, and comparatively higher poverty and economic dependency for disabled people. Discussion will also include the natural collaboration between WHO and the World Bank on this report, and the ways in which the report is being used to facilitated dialogue within the World Bank project leaders and their country counterparts.

Stanley Park Room II, Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver

Protect your Melon: Snow Sport Helmets – Round 2 will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference and continue the discussion from the 2009 Café Put a Lid On It. Warm drinks and light refreshments will be served at Café style tables designed to set an “après ski” ambiance. A local media celebrity will introduce our panelists: Alison Macpherson, York University; Brent Hagel, University of Calgary; and Shelina Babul, University of British Columbia who will discuss the research related to helmet use, from both an engineering and behavioural perspective. This will be followed by a short Q & A from the audience, before breaking out into a World Café style discussion of powerful questions that will tap divergent thinking and allow for generation of collective wisdom.

Our team is presenting a conference titled “Outcomes following Concussion in Hockey (OuCH!)” taking place on Sept 17 (this Saturday). The goal of this conference is to address the increasing number of concussions being sustained by young hockey players. An elite team of doctors, researchers, athletes, reporters, and player representatives will gather with the intention to educate the public on what is known about concussions in hockey, and more importantly, what can be done about them.

Throughout the morning, speakers will interact with audience members by telling stories, encouraging questions, and engendering a rich public discussion. Parents whose children play hockey, along with referees, coaches, trainers, hockey players, and fans of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.

I would like to appeal to your organization to help us spread the word about this conference, even though this is very last minute. If you could post the attached flyer on your website, that would be really wonderful. Moreover, any one associated with BIAC in the Toronto area is encouraged to come, as it will be very helpful for those involved in the treatment of individuals with concussions.

Thank you so much for your assistance.
