A Helping Hand to a New Beginning
In this issue:
- the announcement of the Annual General Meeting of the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia on May 9,
- the Hawaiian Oyster Odyssey on April 29,
- 18 Holes for Hope Golf Tournament on June 15, and
- Where are they now?
Over the past 20 years, BIANS, with volunteer and financial support from various individuals and organizations, has been able to accomplish many things:
- Blended brain injury survivors, family members and professionals together, throughout our organization, to provide a community of support and hope for others affected by brain injury in Nova Scotia
- Established a chapter network at the grassroots community-level offering support and information to survivors and their families
- Been a source of information via mail distribution and through our newsletter and website
- Worked to increase injury prevention and awareness of brain injury
- Added to the continuum of care through the establishment of Aiseirigh House (now operated by the Moving In
- New Directions Society) and the Inroads Program (a community-based program for survivors which teaches cognitive skills and strategies in a combination of one-on-one tutoring, workshops/classroom and social settings)
- Prepared the 2007 Needs Assessment, funded by the Department of Health, whose findings were presented to the Department, the Standing Committee on Community Services, the Government and Liberal Caucuses, the Leader of the Opposition Darrell Dexter and members of New Democratic Party Caucus, and the Disabled Persons Commission in 2008
- Established and maintained current relationships with partners such as Capital Health while carving out new partnerships such as the ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) Working Group comprised of representatives from the IWK, Capital Health’s Rehabilitative Services and MINDS
- Been viewed as a vital support for persons with brain injury
- Been a provider of hope and a stepping stone to wellness and independence
