I want your son to know I have a son who was hit by car age 9 and is now 30 he has had his ups and downs but it does get better love and understanding is very important for both of you and knowledge helps most people are not up on brain injury so they seen uncareing/best help is from suviors and parents who have been threw this as they lived it so i guess it is a look into the future but everyone is not the same so it is only based on that persons experiences. Your son must not give up/many have been in his situation including my son to this day and my son has been so depressed and lost friends had a very hard time in school and still has a hard time now at 30 but he never gave up he is on face book and has friends from school that now talk to him on facebook now they are older and understand more about his condition re: grew up smile He need something to do but sometimes it has been hard for him but he mowed lawns and drives not far in village only knows what he do what can not himself he has a great outlook on life and other times not it is always up and down but he writes a lot of pomes which are very good and is trying to get published/ He has had times when he met new folks that were not good for him /only using him/ but he saw threw that/ he has hard time with girls as they seen to like the bad guys and the girls today are not as caring as yrs ago/so no he is not with anyone now but have had relationships/He likes to drink beer and I found him to be drinking to much and he got a lot drunker faster with less than other guys/ so that was a worry for me because that is not the answer/ He has gotten mad at me several times/ and next day says he is sorry /it is hard at times but that is all a part of life anyway for everyone
He threwout the yrs wanted to die at times but overcame it one day at a time/ He today has his own apt above me and is doing just fine /he cooks a little and does his own choirs now and goes out for a drive meet with a few good friends and goes fishing with his brother and his friends who are older/and who do not take advantage of him. He hopes to win the loto smile He is very handsom man today and is liked a lot by older folks and has a few good friends left/but he carries on day by day I can not say nor would I that everything will be just fine because it will never be I have always told him that their was always someone worse off than him and always will be/ you can not see his injury so people miss judge him a lot but he handles it quite well now but was a problem at first/his speech was effected as he was in a coma for 1 mt had to learn to speak/eat/walk again and by working out a lot he came back little by little and today you can not tell only when he speaks he is slower because he has to think it out before he speaks and it is very important that you have patience because it is harder for you than him smile its repeat and repeat and hands on learning I know smile I had him on a mail route doing flyers and he picked this up after a few weeks because it was repeating and then caught on to other ativities just needed someone to take the time with him and most folks do not have the time or care in their busy lives so it makes it harder for brain injured folks hope this helps you and your son

The road to recovery is as hard for the victom and their family. Our son was 19 and preparing to go to College when he was struck from behind by a truck on a highway. He was not wearing a helmet and after 9 brain operations he has finalt come home. His friends have abandoned him and he see's no future. We try the "keep a smile son, there is a future" but he can't see it. He has attempted suicide and thank god he failed. We look for interests that he could meet people but being in a small town there is really nothing. we will go on and I just hope he see's his value to life and can move forward

I have a friend who had an accident 4 weeks ago and is in a coma yet... they say he will survive but may be different... I appreciate the comments and the personal experience and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to cope with this. There are people out there who have gone through this and are going through it too and I'm just looking for some-I don't know, encouragement?

Greetings

How many others are out there with my experience ?

I received a comminuted skull and facial fractures in a mva in November 1985 . Needless to say I was hideous to look at for a very long time . After the first major surgery which involved several surgeons at Calgarys' Foothills Hospital I was released so near christmas . In a total fog and drinking codeine elixer from a bottle given to me by the doctor I went into a store to buy gifts for my daughters and was horrified to see mothers dragging their children out of the aisles I was walking . That was only the beginning of my nightmare . Several surgeries and 2 decades have passed . I cannot believe how many mistakes I made over the years . I was never councilled for the change in personality I would experience but being a survivor and a guy , I muddled forward completely ignorant of how my personal relationships would suffer . In the eighties that was not part of the medical community for my type of injury . Two marriages later and completely estranged from my daughters , who I might add have no idea of the subsequent damage my injuries caused . Remarkably I was able to carry on a productive career , driven and focused as I had always been . Just not the same person , miserably lacking in social skills . Everything was going great until in May of 2008 while riding my mororcycle to a store to pick up some office supplies , a car turned left in front of me leaving absolutely no room to avoid a collision . Instinctively to prevent a more serious impact I layed the bike down and skidded into the car sideways . I remember pulling my leg out from between the motorcycle and the car and after that, darkness . I awoke in the hospital and discovered I had received a second not nearly as serious concussion . Problem is this one seems to have affected me more than the first and after two years of medication and rehabilitation I am still not back to work and quite honestly I feel hopeless, helpless and completely depressed . I miss my daughters terribly but I don't want to seem weak and blame my sometimes abrasive personality on an injury . It's a guy thing ...
