The road to recovery is as hard for the victom and their family. Our son was 19 and preparing to go to College when he was struck from behind by a truck on a highway. He was not wearing a helmet and after 9 brain operations he has finalt come home. His friends have abandoned him and he see's no future. We try the "keep a smile son, there is a future" but he can't see it. He has attempted suicide and thank god he failed. We look for interests that he could meet people but being in a small town there is really nothing. we will go on and I just hope he see's his value to life and can move forward

I have a friend who had an accident 4 weeks ago and is in a coma yet... they say he will survive but may be different... I appreciate the comments and the personal experience and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to cope with this. There are people out there who have gone through this and are going through it too and I'm just looking for some-I don't know, encouragement?

Greetings

How many others are out there with my experience ?

I received a comminuted skull and facial fractures in a mva in November 1985 . Needless to say I was hideous to look at for a very long time . After the first major surgery which involved several surgeons at Calgarys' Foothills Hospital I was released so near christmas . In a total fog and drinking codeine elixer from a bottle given to me by the doctor I went into a store to buy gifts for my daughters and was horrified to see mothers dragging their children out of the aisles I was walking . That was only the beginning of my nightmare . Several surgeries and 2 decades have passed . I cannot believe how many mistakes I made over the years . I was never councilled for the change in personality I would experience but being a survivor and a guy , I muddled forward completely ignorant of how my personal relationships would suffer . In the eighties that was not part of the medical community for my type of injury . Two marriages later and completely estranged from my daughters , who I might add have no idea of the subsequent damage my injuries caused . Remarkably I was able to carry on a productive career , driven and focused as I had always been . Just not the same person , miserably lacking in social skills . Everything was going great until in May of 2008 while riding my mororcycle to a store to pick up some office supplies , a car turned left in front of me leaving absolutely no room to avoid a collision . Instinctively to prevent a more serious impact I layed the bike down and skidded into the car sideways . I remember pulling my leg out from between the motorcycle and the car and after that, darkness . I awoke in the hospital and discovered I had received a second not nearly as serious concussion . Problem is this one seems to have affected me more than the first and after two years of medication and rehabilitation I am still not back to work and quite honestly I feel hopeless, helpless and completely depressed . I miss my daughters terribly but I don't want to seem weak and blame my sometimes abrasive personality on an injury . It's a guy thing ...
